The purpose of this procedure is to describe the requirements for the inspection use and maintenance of forklifts (and other powered industrial trucks). This procedure is based upon the requirements of 29 CFR 1910.178 and standard safe operating practices.

6.0 TRAINING
- 6.1 New operator training will consist of the following items:
- 6.2 Refresher training is designed to assist operators regain some skills that may have been lost. Refresher training will occur under the following circumstances:
- 6.3 To be authorized to operate a PIT the operator must complete the classroom training, the obstacle course, and be observed and evaluated while maneuvering the specific piece of equipment that they will be operating.
- 6.4 All PIT instructors must be qualified and have experience on the equipment that they will be teaching.
- 6.5 Recertification of PIT operators shall be performed every 3 years.
- 6.6 Training and evaluation records must be retained for three years.

1.0 PURPOSE

The purpose of this procedure is to provide instructions for the safe operation of Powered Industrial Trucks (PIT) and to prevent accidents, injuries, property damage, or damaged products that may be caused by improper or unsafe use of powered industrial trucks or as a result of inadequate training.

This procedure is intended to comply with 29 CFR 1910.178 – Powered Industrial Trucks.

2.0 SCOPE

This procedure applies to all _____ employees and contractor operations that use powered industrial trucks.

3.0 DEFINITIONS AND ACRONYMS

Grade – The slope of a surface, which is usually measured as the number of feet of rise or fall over a hundred foot horizontal distance (the slope is expressed as a percent).

PIT – Powered Industrial Truck – Any mobile power-propelled truck used to carry, push, pull, lift, stack or tier materials. Examples include: forklifts, powered walk behind stackers, powered pallet jacks, tractors, and motorized hand truck.
